![]() The title track is, once again, among the best on offer, with yet again an excellent introduction, and An Ancient Inherited Shame is the longest song the band had ever done, taking on the issue of rape from the perspective of the victim. ![]() It shows too-the lyrics here are extremely effective. While Darkness Descends conjured images of a world ablaze, it was in a tongue-in-cheek "death is badass" manner, but for this album, the band drew from Gene Hoglan's experience with his sister's abuse as a child and researched mental anguish in its myriad forms, including watching snuff films. Time Does Not Heal: This is the band's swansong, and the logical conclusion of their trend towards more progressive releases, even advertising its "9 songs, 67 minutes, 246 riffs!" The musical brutality had been scaled back on this album, but thematically, this is more brutal than anything else the band had done. Never To Rise Again is one of the shorter tracks on the album, but is every bit as effective as the long ones, and Older Than Time Itself features another great introduction (Dark Angel seems to be quite good at those). ![]() The production is thinner and more lo-fi than on Darkness Descends, and the band sounds somewhat distant. The lyrics are even more verbose, and many tracks go up to or over seven minutes. This album is the forgotten album in between the last album and the next, and is a logical transition between the two. Leave Scars: A new vocalist is featured on this album and the next, and Hoglan's writing takes an even more prominent position. Death Is Certain (Life Is Not) is one of the most driving songs on the album, and introduces the lyrical focus on mental anguish that would characterize the next two albums. The Burning Of Sodom is one of the fastest songs in thrash metal history, clocking in around 280bpm. The title track is one of the best on offer here, rife with apocalyptic imagery and featuring the same drum beat made more famous by Metallica's One two years later. The songs got longer and more complex and the lyrics approached the well-trodden topics of destruction and death in an adjective-ridden, machine-gun like delivery. Here's the title track, which was played live throughout the band's career, and here's Merciless Death, which was re-recorded faster and with slightly updated lyrics for the next album.ĭarkness Descends: Considered by most the band's seminal release, and is considered today one of the finest releases of the great year of 1986. thrash metal band) Dark Angel (Dubstep producer). This is the band before they got Gene Hoglan as a drummer, so the technicality and lyrical eloquence are not nearly as apparent as on later releases. Get Dark Angel setlists - view them, share them, discuss them with other Dark Angel. We Have Arrived: The band's debut, and feels a lot like a demo. They are characterized by long, complex songs with long, eloquent lyrical passages delivered extremely fast. I know this is a short discography, but I want to get in on this.įor those not familiar with the band, Dark Angel was one of the heavier thrash metal bands of the 80's, and was a big influence on the then-developing death metal scenes.
